Sleep Apnea and Snoring

Sleep Apnea and Snoring

Although common, sleep apnea is a serious disorder where while sleeping, your breathing is briefly interrupted. If you do have sleep apnea, chances are that you are completely unaware of these short breathing pauses which can occur hundreds of times each night, jolting you from your natural sleep rhythm. All that you realize is that you do not feel as mentally sharp, energetic, or productive throughout the day as you should.

Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common type of sleep apnea and it occurs when the airway becomes blocked, it causes loud snoring and pauses in breathing. Being as sleep apnea will only occur as you sleep, you probably will not discover the issue until a roommate or bed partner complains that you snore. Although it may cause you to feel self-conscious and you may be tempted to make light of the snoring, it is not something that should be ignored. Sleep apnea can take a serious toll not only on your physical health but also on your emotional health. READ MORE…..

TMJ Treatment

TMJ Treatment

People face different bodily health issues on the mouth and face, but disorder such as Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and those muscle disorders have been on the rise. In most cases, the disorders often manifest in the form of a collection of diverse groups of related symptoms and conditions.

TMJs comprise of two joints that connect the jawbones to the skull; these are essential for most of the core function of the mouth that includes eating and speaking. For such a function, the joints work in conjunction with intricately arranged ligaments, muscles, bones, and discs. Therefore, it would be had to chew food, speak, articulate thoughts or even smile without the TMJ. If this joint is injured or damaged by various factors such as whiplash or is unbalanced, then the affected person will have to endure various problems that are associated with the injured or damaged TMJ. Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom Teeth Removal

The third molars often referred to as “wisdom teeth”, are the last adult teeth to grow. Most adults have four, though since all humans are different some people develop more or fewer teeth. Some people have no issues when their wisdom teeth grow in. Others have a rough time, due to their jaw being too small. These teeth also grow sideways or become trapped under the gums on a regular basis.  READ MORE…..

Bad Breath Treatment

Bad Breath (Halitosis) Treatment

What Causes Halitosis?

When you exhale, a volatile sulfur is released into the atmosphere, it’s during this process that halitosis is created. The compounds released contain sulfur, methyl marcaptan, and hydrogen sulfide. Mints and gums, don’t do anything more than mask this offensive odor. They are only a temporary solution. If you want to get rid of bad breath, you have to begin by finding the cause.

Food stuck between the teeth are a common cause of bad breath. Any food that remains in your mouth between brushing, caught between your teeth, will start rotting. This rotting food will release an offensive odor when you exhale. That’s why proper oral hygiene is important, including brushing and flossing. READ MORE…..

Root Canal Therapy

Everything You Need To Know About Root Canal Procedures

When teeth become severely infected or experience a significant amount of decay, there are usually two treatment options available. The first option is to remove the tooth through dental extraction. The other option is to use a procedure known as root canal therapy. This treatment removes the damaged inner portions of the tooth, replacing them with a special dental filler. This enables the patient to keep their tooth while at the same time relieving pain and reducing the chances of further decay. READ MORE…..

The Good, The Bad And The Ugly Of Home Remedies For Teeth Whitening

There are many people who are concerned with whitening their teeth.  One of the reasons for this is that stained teeth make you look unhealthy and old, but there are many of the good things in life that stain teeth including coffee, chocolate, beer and red wine.  While teeth whitening at a dental office is proven to be effective and safe, there are many people looking at ways to whiten their teeth at home.  When you do this you need to be aware that some home whitening methods could actually damage your teeth.

The Good Home Remedies

There are several at-home whitening methods that you can use which are good for you.  There is no concrete proof that they whiten your teeth, but they often have additional benefits that you should consider.

The first is rinsing your mouth with coconut oil for approximately 20 minutes, which might sound like a hard task, but has evidence of helping with teeth whitening.  Doing this can also help protect your teeth from decay, gum disease, and bad breath.  It is unclear if the coconut oil has something to do with this or if it is the rinsing of your mouth for 20 minutes that provides the benefits.  Sesame oil has shown promise for this in studies, but there are no studies looking at coconut oil.

Another option that you can look at is rinsing your mouth with peroxide after you have brushed your teeth.  You can use the bottle of peroxide that you have for cuts, but make sure it is a 3% solution and mix it with water at a ratio of 50:50.  You can then use it to rinse and this is almost the same as the solution used in dental offices for whitening, but it is much weaker and safe for your gums.  The results from this will take a while to show, but they are real and they do last.

The Bad Home Remedies

While there are good home remedies, there are others that will cause damage to your teeth and you need to know about them.  It is important that you avoid these remedies at all costs and if you know someone who is using them you should advise them to stop.

There is an online recipe that states that you should brush your teeth with a homemade toothpaste made with baking soda and strawberries 3 times a day for 10 days.  The problem with this is that studies done have shown that it does not work and will damage your teeth.  The acid found in strawberries will overpower the baking soda and contributes to the erosion of the enamel of your teeth.

Another dangerous home remedy is to rinse your mouth with apple cider vinegar.  Vinegar is an acid and cider vinegar has a pH of 3 which is comparable to soda and white wine.  Any substance with a pH of 5 or less will start to erode your tooth enamel.  Apple cider vinegar may actually whiten your teeth, but this is due to the acid dissolving the organic stains on the enamel as well as the enamel itself.  This acid attack will also make your teeth more vulnerable to staining and after a while, the enamel will be so thin the dentin will show and make your teeth look yellow.

The Ugly Home Remedies

There are some teeth whitening home remedies that do not work at all.  Some of these remedies will also be very messy and you will want to avoid them where possible.

A teeth whitening technique which has gained popularity is activated charcoal.  The theory behind this remedy is that the charcoal includes tiny voids that trap organic materials to neutralize the poisons.  The belief is that this will trap the organic material causing stains on your teeth, but the truth is that it does not work.

It is possible to get an activated charcoal powder that you mix with water to create a paste that can be used to brush your teeth.  The problem is that you will need to rinse your mouth very thoroughly to ensure that all the unattractive black particles are gone.  Charcoal is actually soft and will not damage the enamel of your teeth, but the particles can irritate the gums if you are not careful and this could cause damage if you do not pay enough attention.

Porcelain Veneers

If you want to change your appearance, then consider dental veneers. They are a great option if you have a gap between your teeth, chipped teeth or if you have misshaped teeth. Veneers are covers that are thin and they adhere to the teeth. There are different types of dental veneers and if you want to find out which one is the best for you, then you should speak with your dentist.

Dental veneers offer you a great way to improve your smile. These thin coverings go over the front of your tooth or teeth. Once they are set in place, they will blend in with your other teeth. Veneers are used to correct various issues such as chipped teeth, crooked teeth, teeth that can’t be whitened with bleaching and uneven spaces or gaps between teeth. READ MORE…..

Invisalign

If you want the confidence of a great smile you should use Invisalign to straighten your teeth discreetly. Invisalign uses a series of almost invisible aligning trays to move teeth gradually based on a treatment plan designed specifically for you.

It does not involve any metal brackets or wires meaning that you will have complete confidence in your smile both during and after treatment. Most people won’t actually notice you are wearing them. The aligners are also removable meaning that you can eat what you wish then brush and floss as you do normally.  READ MORE…..

Full Mouth Reconstruction

The terms full mouth restoration, rehabilitation, and reconstruction are often used interchangeably when describing the process of simultaneously restoring or rebuilding all the teeth in the lower and upper jaws.

Full mouth reconstruction usually involves restorative dentists (performing procedures such as veneers, bridges, and crowns) or general dentists. It can incorporate dental specialists such as oral surgeons, periodontists (gum specialists), endodontists (tooth pulp specialists), and orthodontists (tooth position and movements specialists). Dentures

Dentures are removable natural-looking replacement teeth.  There are two main kinds of dentures: partial and full.

Patients are given full dentures when all of their natural teeth are lost or have been removed.  Once the gum tissue is healed, which may take several months, conventional full dentures are then placed.  Immediate full dentures get placed right after the teeth are removed and might need to be adjusted frequently during the first few months that they are used.  READ MORE…..
